Workshop Experience

Where is the mosaic workshop located in Ravenna?
Our atelier is tucked away in the heart of Ravenna’s historic city center, just a short walk from the UNESCO World Heritage sites like the Basilica of San Vitale. It’s the perfect creative break during your Ravenna day trip.
I have zero art skills. Is this class for me?
Absolutely. You don't need to be Michelangelo. This is a hands-on mosaic course for beginners where a professional local artist guides you through every step. We focus on fun and craft, not stress.
What materials and tools will I use?
You’ll work with the real deal: natural marble and Venetian glass smalti. You’ll use the traditional martellina (mosaic hammer) and tagliolo to cut your tiles, just like the masters did 1500 years ago.
What is the "Ravenna Method" of mosaic making?
Ravenna is the World Capital of Mosaics. During the workshop, you'll learn the traditional "double-reverse" or direct techniques used in Byzantine art, focusing on the "andamento" (the flow and rhythm of the tiles).

Logistics & Travel

Can I take my mosaic home on a flight?
Yes! Your 4x4 inch (10x10 cm) masterpiece is designed to be travel-friendly. It’s sturdy, light, and fits perfectly in your carry-on. It’s the ultimate handmade souvenir from Italy.
Is the workshop suitable for kids?
Kids love it! It’s one of the best things to do in Ravenna with family. We recommend it for children aged 6 and up, as it’s a very tactile and engaging experience.
How long is the class and what should I wear?
The workshop lasts about 2 to 2.5 hours. There’s no strict dress code, but we suggest comfortable clothes. We’ll provide an apron, but you might get a little "artist's dust" on your hands!

Booking & Why Us

Is the workshop conducted in English?
Yes, our artists speak fluent English. You won't miss a single instruction, and you can ask all the questions you want about the technique or the local Ravenna lifestyle.
What is the maximum group size?
We keep it intimate. Groups are capped at 10 people to ensure the artist can give you personal attention. No crowded, touristy "factory" vibes here.
Why should I book with Taste Bologna?
We are locals, not a global booking machine. We’ve been featured by The Guardian, Netflix, and the BBC because we pick the most authentic experiences. If you want a real connection with Ravenna's soul, you're in the right place.
