Frequently Asked Questions

General Tour Information

How long is the tour and what areas of Modena will we visit?
The Modena Food Tour lasts approximately 4 hours. We’ll start with a traditional Modenese breakfast, explore the historic Albinelli Market (the beating heart of the city), and visit a real acetaia (balsamic vinegar cellar) that is usually closed to the public.
Where is the meeting spot and where does the tour end?
We meet at 10:00 AM in Piazza Grande, right next to the Pietra Ringadora (the large rectangular stone). The tour ends in a central location, perfect for continuing your walk through Modena's beautiful historic center.
I am staying in Bologna; is it easy to reach Modena?
Very easy! Modena is just a 35-minute train ride from Bologna Central Station. Trains run frequently and tickets cost approximately €4. It’s a perfect day trip to add to your Italian itinerary.
What language will the guide speak?
Our scheduled tours are conducted in English by local experts. If you would like a tour in another language (such as Italian, Spanish, or French), please contact us to request a private tour, and we will do our best to accommodate you.
What should I do if I’m running late for the tour?
We have a 15-minute policy: to respect the schedule of our guests and partners, we always start the tour 15 minutes after the official meeting time. If you are running late, please contact us immediately via email, phone, or WhatsApp. We will do our absolute best to help you catch up with the group at the first possible stop.

Food and Drink

What kind of food will we taste? Is it enough for a meal?
Expect a feast! You’ll try the famous Gnocco Fritto dipped in cappuccino, aged Parmigiano Reggiano, several types of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar DOP, and Tigelle paired with Lambrusco wine. It is definitely enough to count as a full, satisfying lunch.
Is the tour suitable for vegetarians or those with dietary requirements?
Yes! We can accommodate vegetarians and gluten-free diets. However, please note that for celiacs, we may need to adapt some stops (like the gnocco fritto or pasta/bread-based items). Please mention your needs in the "Notes" during booking. Note: This tour is not recommended for vegans as the local cuisine is heavily based on dairy and pork.
Are drinks included? What if I don’t drink alcohol?
Yes, tastings of local Lambrusco wine are included. If you don't drink alcohol, we provide water or high-quality non-alcoholic alternatives at every stop.

Booking and Payment

How do I book and what payment methods do you accept?
You can book directly and securely through our online platform. We accept all major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex). Please note that cash payments on the day of the tour are not accepted.
Where do I add my discount voucher?
You can enter your code in the "Promo Code" or "Voucher" box at the final stage of the checkout process. The total will update automatically before you pay.
What if it rains?
Modena is famous for its porticos (covered walkways). We run the tour rain or shine, and the porticos will keep us dry for most of the experience.

Accessibility & Safety

Is there a lot of walking involved?
The pace is very relaxed. We cover about 2 km (approx. 1.2 miles) within the flat, pedestrian-friendly city center. There are plenty of opportunities to sit and enjoy the tastings.
Is the tour wheelchair and stroller accessible?
Yes, the route is generally accessible. Some historic shops might have a small step, but we can easily manage. Please let us know in the "Notes" section of your booking so we can ensure the smoothest possible route.
Can I bring my children?
Of course! Children usually love the market and the sweet stops. Infants and children under 4 years old join for free, while we offer discounted rates for older children.

Tour Experience & Expectations

What is the maximum group size?
To keep the experience personal and high-quality, we limit our Modena groups to a maximum of 8 people. This allows us to enter small, authentic family shops that larger groups simply cannot visit.
What should I wear?
Casual attire is perfect, but comfortable walking shoes are essential. You’ll be walking on historic stones and exploring the market, so leave the heels at home!
Should I tip the guide?
Tipping is not mandatory in Italy, but it is greatly appreciated if you enjoyed the experience. If your guide made your day, feel free to show your thanks!
Why book with Taste Bologna for a Modena tour?
We were the pioneers of food tours in this region. We don't do "tourist traps"; we take you where we personally shop. We’ve been featured by The Guardian, Netflix, and the BBC, but we prefer to let our reviews and our food speak for themselves!
